Our responsibility to act against climate change

Act against climate change

Building a better future—starting with how we operate

Without action against climate change, the impacts on the environment, society, and the economy will be devastating. The business community, the public sector, and individuals must collaborate to tackle the challenges we face. At Eficode, we are committed to doing our part to ensure environmental sustainability, empowering our people to adopt responsible operating practices in our local offices, driving forward change in our global operations, and in the design and delivery of services to our clients.

We certainly have a lot to do.

Our commitment to science-based net-zero

Eficode has committed to setting near and long-term company-wide emission reduction targets in line with science-based net-zero with the SBTi (Science Based Target Initiative).

This is step one in our target-setting journey, but a crucial step.

About the Science-Based Targets initiative

The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is a corporate climate action organisation that enables companies and financial institutions worldwide to play their part in combating the climate crisis. They develop standards, tools and guidance which allow companies to set greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reductions targets in line with what is needed to keep global heating below catastrophic levels and reach net-zero by 2050 at the latest. The SBTi is incorporated as a charity, with a subsidiary that hosts their target validation services. Their partners are CDP (Climate Disclosure Project), the United Nations Global Compact, the We Mean Business Coalition, the World Resources Institute (WRI), and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).

Science-based targets provide companies with a clearly-defined path to reduce emissions in line with the Paris Agreement goals. More than 6,000 businesses around the world are already working with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

What are the benefits of setting science-based targets?

Reducing GHG emissions in line with climate science is good for the planet and for business.

It supports operational efficiency, provides resilience and spurs innovation and competitiveness. Companies going through the target validation process benefit from detailed feedback and support from the SBTi’s technical experts.

Our carbon accounting methodology

Eficode has calculated its climate impact according to the guidelines of The Greenhouse Gas Protocol (generally referred to as GHG protocol). Our impact is reported under Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions, as defined in the table available as PDF.

Emission factor accuracy

In the 'Inclusion' column, you will see we refer to 'spend' or 'activity' data. This references the type of data we used to calculate our emissions. Activity data produces more accurate results than spend data. However, activity data is not always available. For example, not all Eficode’s suppliers will calculate their carbon emissions. Over time, we hope to improve the accuracy of our data by improving our internal processes and engaging with and supporting our suppliers to understand their own impacts better.

As our data quality improves, it makes our calculations more accurate, horrah! But it also shifts the parameters from that which our baseline calculations are measured. This makes it harder to compare numbers with those of other companies in the same field, or even ourselves year on year. Thankfully, standards continue to develop, as does Eficode, and we aim to provide transparent information in each year's reports so that both you and we can interpret the long-term development of our carbon footprint and carbon reduction efforts.

Inflation

Our methodology accounts for inflation to provide accurate carbon reporting and ensure GHG compliance. As most science-based emissions factors are not updated annually, they need to be adjusted to reflect the current economic environment. Thus, for monetary variables, the engine we use factors in the regional inflation across all sectors that occurred between when an emissions factor was calculated and the time of the activity.

Reporting period

Eficode’s financial year runs from June to July. Our initial calculations cover the calendar year 2023. In order to align our carbon accounting year with our financial accounting year, we have conducted a pro-rata calculation of the period January 2024 to June 2024. Our next report will be published in the Q2 of our financial year ending June 2025.

Overview at the group level

This includes all Eficode Group entities. When an acquisition is completed in the reporting year, carbon accounts from this entity are included for the period of legal ownership. If necessary, advisory information of any such events and how they affect the interpretation of the data, if at all, is provided.
